“… ‘Neath furrowed Maui mountain crests, Saint Anthony, Saint
Anthony undaunted stands!”

As we begin the 2007-2008 school year at Saint Anthony Junior Senior High, we have the opportunity to look to both the past and the future. After all, the past is actually the foundation on which our future. After all, the past is actually the foundation on which our future is going to be built. Thanks to the wonderful work of Mrs. Edwina Wilson-Snyder, our recently retired Principal, our school’s foundation is stronger than ever! We, the members of the Saint Anthony ohana, owe her a great debt of gratitude for inspiring us to face the challenges involved in moving forward without discarding our 159 years of history. She has shown us how important it is to provide a solid education that is both Catholic and Hawaiian in spirit. Edwina will be missed, but her spirit inspires us to keep the momentum going. We have indeed come a long way from the days of being two separate parochial high schools run by the Marianists (boys) and by the Maryknoll and Carondelet Sisters (girls) to our present status as a Junior Senior High co-ed high school run by the Diocese of Honolulu, staffed by dedicated lay men and women.

I have personal experience of that historic moment when the Boy’s School and Girl’s School were joined in 1968. I was a young Marianist Brother then, assigned to teach at a new co-ed venture. We were among the first Catholic high schools in Hawaii to take this step. Now, many years later, I am delighted to be coming “home,” to return to my Maui roots in order to serve the faculty, staff, parents, and students of Saint Anthony Junior Senior High School as their Principal. I look forward to re-establishing old relationships and building new ones. After all, that is what makes Saint Anthony so special — our family spirit, our shared history, our common hopes and dreams for this next generation of young men and women.

This handbook cannot capture all of that spirit in print, but it serves to demonstrate our commitment to nourish and develop the “whole person,” body, mind and spirit, We have a lot to live up to in terms of sustaining our past educational accomplishments; we have even more challenges to meet in terms of building a strong educational future. As our school motto reminds us, there is strength in unity. Let us continue to work together; let us continue to stand undaunted:

Me ke aloha pumehana,
