A class retreat is a very special time for individual growth as well as an opportunity for students to interact with their classmates on a level different from that of the everyday classroom. It is such an important time for each student that class retreats are scheduled off campus (Kahului Community Center) and are mandatory for all students. Each retreat is designed to provide for growth in the spiritual, emotional and interpersonal realms appropriate to the age group of the students. Students who have participated in the LIFE summer program act as presenters and as small group facilitators for all class retreats except the senior’s.
The 12th Grade Retreat and the Senior Overnight Retreat are facilitated by adults.
7th Grade Retreat – I Am Someone Special (September 22, 2009)
This retreat helps the students see themselves as unique individuals and to feel good about who God has made them to be. It is anchored in the story of Zacchaeus found in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 19:1-10). Like Zacchaeus, students learn that our self-esteem is not limited to our physical characteristics but is built on the gifts with which God has blessed us. God invites us to use those gifts to build up our own self-esteem and the self-esteem of others.
8th Grade Retreat - Peer Pressure (October 20, 2009)
This retreat focuses on what peer pressure is, why we give in to negative peer pressure, and what we can do to resist it. The Scriptural basis of the retreat is Luke 15:11-18: the story of the Prodigal Son. In this parable students learn how peer pressure can lead people to make poor choices as well as good choices and that with God’s help we can learn from our mistakes and make decisions for ourselves.
9th Grade Retreat - Freshman Survival (August 25, 2009)
During this retreat the Freshmen are offered tips and strategies for coping successfully with the major changes, particularly changes involving interpersonal relationships, they will experience during their first year of high school. The retreat finds its foundation in Genesis 12:1-9: the story of Abram. Students can relate to someone who had to make a major transition in his life and learn how to cope with the resulting changes.
10th Grade Retreat – Celebrating Diversity (January 14, 2010)
The Scriptural foundation of this retreat is St. Paul’s letter to the Colossians (Colossians 3:10-14). It allows students to share the special nature of their own ethnic cultures and to examine the issues that underlie racism. Students are challenged to seek ways to diminish the negative effects of racism in their own lives and in the community.
11th Grade Retreat – Peacemaking (February 9, 2010)
This retreat has students explore the causes of injustice and helps them discover ways to be peacemakers. In the story of Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:19-31), Jesus reminds us to have compassion on others and bring peace to their lives. The goal of the retreat is to have students come to understand the saying “If you want peace, work for justice.”
12th Grade Retreat – Male and Female in the Image of God (November 17, 2009)
In the Book of Genesis (Genesis 1:26-31) we are reminded that we have been created male and female in the image of God. This retreat invites students to see their sexuality as a gift from God and to learn how to appropriately share that gift with others.
Senior Overnight Retreat at Camp Maluhia (April 19, 2010)
The Senior Overnight Retreat is a very special time. Students are encouraged to reflect on their high school years and to celebrate both the good times and the hard times. The Seniors are challenged to examine the values that they have developed during these years and to see how they will assist them in the future both in higher education and in the rest of their lives. The retreat usually results in a much deeper sharing between class members.
